The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has issued notices to 1152 suspected Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) holders in various parts of the country including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as part of a process of verification and scrutiny.
The action came in the wake of some doubts about the citizenship status, family records and personal information of a few people on the national database, according to official sources.
Verification Process Underway
NADRA has undertaken a comprehensive verification exercise to uncover any discrepancies in identity documents and to verify the National Registration System, officials said.
The notices were issued under instructions passed down from the Regional Headquarters of the NADRA to all concerned individuals to report to the verification boards as appropriate within two weeks.
Candidates have been advised to bring original supporting documents with them to establish their identity and citizenship status.
Scrutiny of Suspected Afghan Refugees
The verification process also involves a review of some of the suspected Afghans whose identity documents are in question, sources said.
The investigations are underway into family trees of those issued CNICs, their residential records and supporting documents, to see whether they adhere to Pakistan’s citizenship law and NADRA rules.
The process was said to be to enhance the integrity of the national identity system to avoid abuse of official documentation.
NADRA Tightens Identity Verification Measures
In recent years, NADRA has stepped up its activities to streamline the process of biometric verification, digital record monitoring and identity authentication throughout the country.
The authority has been carrying out routine checks of suspicious registrations, especially in border regions and places where there is more migration.
People notified should work closely with the verification boards and submit complete and accurate paperwork to ensure they do not experience any legal difficulties or lose their ID documents, officials said.
Citizens Advised to Respond Promptly
NADRA stated that if they do not appear before the appointed board within the given timeframe, further legal or administrative measures may be undertaken.
The authority said it urged people to maintain their family, biometric and personal data in the national database to eliminate the problem of verification in the future.
The verification drive is likely to be ongoing in various parts of the country, with the goal of establishing transparency and authenticity in the national identity registration system in Pakistan.
