Sheikhupura: Nestlé Pakistan has taken a significant step towards cleaner energy, environmental protection and sustainable industrial development, by launching its $4.5 million biomass steam plant in Sheikhupura, with the support of the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
The facility opened synchronously via digital connection on Sunday. It will consume approximately 72,000 tonnes of agricultural waste per year, as fuel to replace open burning of crop wastes.
Plant to Reduce Carbon Emissions
The biomass plant will produce 30 tonnes of steam per hour and will save some $2.15 million in annual fuel expenses, officials said.
The project will also generate a saving of carbon dioxide emissions of almost 24,345 tonnes per year. The plant will help to minimise crop residue burning and improve air quality in the state of Punjab as it will generate useful energy from agricultural waste.
CM Maryam Highlights Green Industrial Development
During the ceremony, Maryam Nawaz expressed her gratitude to Nestlé Pakistan for their contributions to the country’s industries and environmental protection.
She added that the biomass steam plant was a sign of the country’s shift towards circular economy and renewable energy, in line with the vision of the Punjab government to make the atmosphere cleaner, protect the environment and create sustainable industrial development.
The provincial government would further assist organizations to invest in project of climate friendly and green development, the chief minister reiterated.
Focus on Sustainable Industrial Practices
In the course of the ceremony, officials informed the chief minister about Nestlé Pakistan’s working and its efforts towards environmental sustainability.
The project showcases the use of agricultural waste for producing energy as a substitute for open burning it. These can aid in decreasing pollution and at the same time can provide a chance for industries to minimize their reliance on traditional fuels.
Maryam Pays Tribute at Data Ganj Bakhsh Urs
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, in her address on the occasion of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh Ali Hajveri’s (RA) 983rd annual Urs, expressed her respects to him.
She congratulated the devotees and pilgrims and instructed the concerned authorities to plan the three days festival in a comprehensive manner.
The chief minister directed officials to put in place proper arrangements for Langar and Sabeel and effective traffic management around Data Darbar.
She said facilities for the pilgrims to be provided while at the shrine must not create any inconvenience for the pilgrims.
Maryam Nawaz also prayed for peace and for people to reap benefits of the teachings of the great saints, especially their message of spirituality, humanity and peace.
